Dry skin is one thing that is visibly evident and displeasing both for the person who has it and the one looking at it. And this becomes an everyday problem in the winters. To tackle this seemingly unsolvable problem, you need an appropriate winter skincare routine in place for the winters. And mind you, this routine can NOT be the same as the one you follow during summer months. The reason for this is that when the temperatures are lower, we tend to drink less water because we don’t feel thirsty. This, in turn, is due to the fact that we don’t lose water through sweat in winters as much as we do in summers. So, if the intake of water into the body is less, it will definitely show on your skin.
Here are 10 things you can do to take care of your skin during this harsh weather:
1. HYDRATE:
Drinking adequate amounts of water every day is a very simple and effective way of taking care of your skin. During the winter months, we tend to skip this part since we don’t feel thirsty as much. But make it a point to drink at least 6-8 glasses of water each day. This will keep your body hydrated from the inside. Try to consume fresh fruits and raw vegetables which have high water content. These have been shown to be extremely beneficial not only for the skin but for your general health as well.
2. MOISTURIZE:
Do not skip moisturizer at any cost. Use a thicker moisturizer for winter dry skin care. This will lock the moisture in your skin and keep it going all day long.
3. HUMIDIFY YOUR SURROUNDINGS:
For this, you may use room humidifiers that are readily available in the market these days. Usually, these are kept in closed rooms and can be left on during the night as well. This will keep your skin hydrated from the outside as well.
4. STEAM YOUR FACE:
Steaming your face once in a while is a very good way of making sure that your pores get cleaned properly. These pores tend to remain less active or visible, and there is less sebum secretion form them, steaming your face is still a good option to ensure that the winter skin stays healthy. One addition that you can make to the water is that of essential oil of your choice.
5. A BIG NO TO HOT WATER BATHS:
Take short baths with lukewarm water. Hot water tends to dry the skin more than cold or warm water does.
6. WASH YOUR FACE ONCE DAILY:
Don’t wash your face too much. This again will cause your skin to feel dry.
7. SAY NO TO TONERS FOR A WHILE:
Toners usually contain alcohol, which when applied to the skin, evaporates, leaving the skin dry. So, avoid using toners in the dry months of the year.
8. AVOID INTENSIVE EXFOLIATION:
Exfoliation can cause skin damage on dry skin. So if you have this problem, gentle exfoliation with the use of appropriate oil-based skincare products is the way to go.
9. WATCH YOUR LIPS:
Use petroleum jelly on your lips regularly, to keep the moisture intact and prevent them from getting chapped.
10. USE CREAM-BASED MAKE-UP:
Instead of using powder-based products, use makeup which is cream or oil-based so that your skin feels plump and glowy.
